Penryn Athletic 0 Vospers Oak Villa 2

Penryn became the latest division one west club to fall foul of a much-improved Vospers Oak Villa side after the Devon club registered a notable win at Kernick Road on Saturday.

Victory for Villa comes on the back of their impressive performance against Porthleven at Gala Parc last week, and right from the offing the visitors showed their sights were set on another three points as they went about putting an under-strength Penryn side under plenty of early pressure.

The warning signs were plain to see as several shots whistled wide of Penryn keeper Chris Symons's goal.

Vospers' skipper Steve Blackburn came closest to opening the scoring during an opening half hour which saw Steve Jewell's side comfortably second best.

But gradually Penryn found their feet. Dave Broglino and Greg Hobbs combined well to put Ed Wilton in on goal, but Villa keeper Ian Evans was alert and easily dealt with Wilton's under-hit shot.

Villa's opener came from perhaps Penryn's best first-half chance after the home side rattled the Vospers crossbar from a corner.

But as the ball bounced clear Vospers broke quickly, and Penryn defender Paul Baldwin found himself out of position as Worth brother Adam and Dan combined well, before Dan laid a pass into the path of Blackburn on the right, and he hammered a fierce drive past Symons and into the far corner.

After a lacklustre first half display Penryn did much better after the restart, with Dale Band having the best chance on goal, only to hesitate a moment too long, allowing the visitors to sew up the holes before he could get a shot off.

Gradually the game swung back in favour of Vospers, and Blackburn almost bagged his second when he failed to get enough on a low cross driven into the six yard box.

Soon after Villa's Andy Harris lashed a shot ove rthe bar as the visitors went for the throat.

Then in the 89th minutes of normal time Harris played a ball in for Phil Daniel, who controlled it well before rounding the keeper and tapping into an empty net.

It might even have got worse for Penryn as the game headed into injury time.

Symons and sweeper David Blizzard both made goalline clearances as Vospers pushed for a third that never came.

Penryn remain fifth in the league, a country mile behind league leaders Mousehole, and four points of Dobwalls in third.

Jewell will be hoping for an improved performance when his side travel to Helston's Charity Cup conquerors Perranporth next week.
