HELSTON’S perfect start to the season continued on Saturday as they progressed to the second round of the Walter C Parson League Cup.

The blues thumped Perranporth 6-1 in the opening round of the competition with a hat-trick for goal machine Mark Goldsworthy, taking his tally to 19 already this season.

Andrew Westgarth, Charlie Young and Tom Russell also got on the scoresheet for Helston, who have not lost a game in league or cup football since the latest campaign started.

Illogan RBL will be the next opponent for Athletic in the competition, with the match set to be a mouth-watering tie at Kellaway Park as both sides currently sit in the top two spots of the South West Peninsula League’s West Division.

Despite a scoreline which suggested Helston eased through, it was not quite the case as they were made to battle in the first half.

Perran even took the lead after 29 minutes when Paul Robertson popped up to score at Ponsmere Valley.

But it did not take long for the Blues to respond as Goldsworthy equalised for the visitors five minutes before the break.

He then doubled the tally in the 53rd minute before completing the hat-trick with 16 minutes to go.

After his third goal, Helston ran riot as they put three more into Perran’s net before the final whistle through Westgarth, Russell and Young.

Athletic’s manager Sid Taylor said he was pleased to see his side bring their league form into a cup competition.

“It is a relief to play a bit of cup football rather than league for once,” Taylor said.

“I thought Perranporth started really brightly, so it was a bit tough at first, but the main thing is we have got through to the next round.

“I am really happy with the squad at the moment and it is good to see guys like Andrew [Westgarth] coming off the bench and scoring.”

The two sides will meet again, this time in the league, on October 4.

Next up for Helston is a game away at Penryn Athletic tonight.
