BOUNCING back from two defeats in a row is the latest priority for Helston Athletic according to their boss Sid Taylor.

Their 3-0 loss to Illogan RBL on Saturday came three days after a thrilling match 5-4 defeat at Penryn Athletic, which ended their 100 per cent winning start to the season.

The Blues remain top of the South West Peninsula League West Division but they can move down to second tonight if Penryn beat Perranporth at home.

Taylor said it was disappointing to lose two games on the bounce, but added they both came against tough opposition and now his team must show they can pick themselves back up.

“We knew Saturday was going to be difficult at Illogan and last Wednesday we didn’t defend well,” Taylor said.

“What we have to do now is get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.

“If you had offered me the option of getting to this stage of the season with seven wins in the league, one in the cup and two losses, then I would have accepted that.

“It was a terrific start to the season which may have now been knocked down to a good start with the two losses, but we must show we can bounce back.”

He went onto say his players must not forget their unbeaten run included a victory over Illogan along with wins against St Dennis and Mousehole, all of whom are in the top five places in the league table.

Taylor said: “We are disappointed to have lost twice in a row, but we are still top of the division and have beaten some tough teams already this season.

“Our start to the campaign was trickier than it might sound now as we won the first seven games and the last couple of games have come against the side who were third in the table, so it was always going to be hard.

“It would have incredible to go through the whole season undefeated, but now we just have to get over the defeats and move on as a team.”

On Friday, Athletic welcomed defender Johan Shainberg to the club.

The former Porthleven player has signed over from Exeter University as cover for Ash and Ben Stidwell who will both have to serve suspensions after being sent off during the loss at Penryn.
