STRIKES from David Leech and Luke Brabyn in the last ten minutes helped Penryn Athletic stay in second play of the South West Peninsula League West.

The visitors had been 1-0 down at Holsworthy after Carlo Chandler’s 34th minute goal and were struggling to get a hold of Saturday’s game against the side sitting at the wrong end of the table.

But their late salvo means they have still lost just one match this season and are level on points with league leaders Helston Athletic, although they sit one place below them on goal difference.

Penryn’s game was full of mistakes all over the park and things started to go wrong at Upcott Field after ten minutes when Sean Johnson picked up an injury and had to go off.

His place on the pitch was taken up by 16-year-old David Leech and he came close to opening the scoring in the 23rd minute, but his shot hit the post.

Chandler had been giving Athletic plenty of problems to deal with using his strong running and pace to get in among the defence.

This pressure paid off in the 34th minute as he slipped into the box and placed an effort past Chris Symons and into the bottom corner to give Holsworthy the lead.

Kevin Lawrence had a couple of chances before the break for Athletic, but both shots missed the target.

Dominic Abbott also went close to adding a second for Holsworthy on the stroke of half time but he hit the ball wide of goal after being put through.

Eventually Penryn found a way back into the game, but they had to wait until the 80th minute for their luck to change.

The ball was moved into the box after Ryan Martt and Tyler Cooke linked up well before supplying a pass to Leech, who struck a shot which deflected off a defender’s hand and past Darren Rose in Holsworthy’s goal.

For the first time in the match the hosts were on the back foot and within three minutes they found themselves behind as Brabyn cut in from the right before sending a shot across the goal and in, much to the bewilderment of home players and fans.

Athletic managed to hold out for the three points after this and could overtake Helston next Saturday if they get a point at home to Dobwalls.
