EVEN though the score suggests otherwise, Porthleven will feel aggrieved not to have come away with at least a point on Saturday.

The 5-1 defeat inflicted on them by St Dennis is their fourth in a row in the South West Peninsula League West.

But the Fishermen had plenty of chances to score themselves and on a different day may have come away with a draw or perhaps a win.

However, errors at the back gifted goals to the visitors and pushed Port down to 13th in the table.

It was the home side who started the brighter as Freddie Williams and Sam Kay both went close in the opening 20 minutes.

Both had to settle for seeing their shots just sneak wide of the post and in the 25th minute, St Dennis took the lead instead.

A break down the right wing left defender Dan Tarrant, who had played five games in nine days for the Navy in the build-up to Saturday, for dead and allowed Carl Rickard to run in and score.

Port kept pushing forwards and Williams went close again when his hit a shot on the turn which brought a good save from the away goalkeeper.

Then a mistake at the back as Chris Wormington miss-kicked a clearance gifted the second goal to St Dennis as Scott Brown made the most of the slip-up.

Matt Best went close for Port when his head met William’s cross from the right, but the midfielder could not give his effort any direction as it missed the target.

Moments after the half time break, Port got a foothold in the match as Kay’s cross into the penalty area found Liam Hunter who thumped home a volley.

But just as things were looking up for them, the hosts conceded again when Scott Hill’s shot took a deflection off Tom Hawkins causing the ball to loop up in the air before dipping under the crossbar.

Concentration was turned off in their defence at this point and 60 seconds later Brown got on the end of Rickard’s cross to tap into the net.

The Fishermen still surged forwards and Tom Annear nearly scored from a free kick, only to see his effort saved on the second attempt.

In the last few minutes another mistake by Port gave away the fifth goal as Benji Bryant’s goal kick did not reach the intended target, with Rickard getting in like a flash to fire it past the home goalie.

Millbrook await Port next on Saturday in what will surely be a crucial game as both teams lie in the wrong end of the table.
