HAVING lost their previous two league games, Helston Athletic got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Perranporth.

Their defeats at the hands of Penryn Atheltic and Illogan RBL had been the Blues first in 2014/15, ending an eight game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

But smiles were put back on Helston faces as a hat-trick from striker Mark Goldsworthy couple with goals from captain Jamie Thomson, Ash Stidwell and Mikey Davies handing three points to the hosts.

It allowed them to remain at the top of the South West Peninsula League West table, although their place at the summit comes courtesy of goal difference over Penryn.

With no game for Helston this weekend, an opportunity will arise for Penryn to overtake them at the peak of the table, although the side from Kellaway Park will have two games in hand.

The hosts showed they meant business against the side who sit just one above last place in the league.

Davies put Helston in front before Goldsworthy scored the first goal of his hat-trick.

Stidwell and Thomson got in on the act before the club’s leading goalscorer bagged his second of the match to make it 5-0 at the break.

Perranporth had been swept away in the first 45 minutes, but came out after half time looking a better side.

They improvements led to them scoring a penalty to cut back their arrears with Paul Robertson getting his sixth goal of the season.

However, Helston finished the match with their five goal advantage restored as Goldsworthy completed his hat-trick, taking his tally of league goals in 2014/15 to 22.
