UBER defensive tactics were not enough to prevent Wendron United from toppling Redruth United 3-0 at Clijah Croft.

Coming a fortnight after Dron had defeated the same team 4-1 in the Cornwall Senior Cup first round, they came up against their familiar opponents who had a different gameplan.

With striker Ben Beesley suspended, the hosts opted to go very defensive and keep men behind the ball at all times and counter attack.

But it would prove to be fruitless as a Mikey O'Neill penalty and goals from Justin Searle and Jason Roberts saw the visitors comfortably home in the Jolly's Combination League fixture.

Wendron manager Paul Murray said Redruth's tactics took him a little by surprise, but was happy to come out with the result.

Murray said: “They literally parked the bus against us and it was one of the strangest situations I have been in as a manager.

“With Beesley suspended, I think they hoped we would see him as the threat and by going defensive would throw us off our plan.

“It was frustrating for us, but we kept patient and I am pleased with the mentality the players showed to get the win in the end.”

O'Neill put Dron ahead a minute before the half time whistle in controversial style when Matt Rose was upended right on the edge of the Redruth penalty area.

Much to the disbelief of home players, the referee determined one of Rose's feet had been in the box when the foul took place and awarded a penalty, which O'Neill slotted home.

In the second half, Redruth stuck to their original plan and kept most of their men behind the ball, allowing Dron to simply pass the ball around their defence and midfield.

Eventually tiredness kicked in and opened up chances for the away side again with ten minutes left as Brett Andrew's cross was headed in by Searle.

Roberts finished proceedings off four minutes later when he robbed a defender of the ball before clipping it past Redruth's goalkeeper.

The victory sees Dron leap over their opponents into fourth spot in the league table with Porthleven Reserves next up for them.
