JOHN Dent said he resigned from Falmouth Town after “falling out of love” with the club – adding he was disgusted with the behaviour of the “so-called supporters”.

On Wednesday afternoon the South West Peninsula League Premier Division club confirmed Dent had stepped down from his role with a statement saying he departed due to “personal reasons”.

With just one win in the league so far during this campaign, the Ambers find themselves in the bottom five of the table, having finished 16th last season.

Speaking to the Packet, Dent who took on the job in September last year admitted there were a few issues which had led to his resignation.

However, he said the crux of his decision was because of lack of support from fans, adding the club cannot keep operating in the way it is currently.

Dent said: “There’s one person who is trying to do everything behind the scenes, much to his credit, but it is just not working.

“Also the behaviour of the so-called supporters who were slagging off some of the players is appalling.

“For them to give 100 per cent every week to then be treated like they are by supporters is disgraceful.

“They are living in the past and the sooner they realise Falmouth Town is not what it used to be, the better it will be for them.

“Falmouth Town was my club and I always wanted to go back, but since returning I have fallen out of love with the place, which is the most disappointing thing of all.”

He went onto say unless attitudes change from the terraces, a number of players could soon follow suit and walk away from the club.

“The players have been saying how disgusted they are with the abuse they’ve received from fans,” said Dent, who spent five seasons as an Ambers player in his career.

“The players are there because they want to play for Falmouth and if they do end up in a relegation dogfight, then you need players who want to be there.

“But some are becoming disillusioned because of the abuse and if they leave and the club are relegated, the supporters will only have themselves to blame at the end of the day.”

His final game in charge came last Tuesday as Town fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to St Blazey.

As Town begin their hunt for a new manager, Dent wished his successor luck.

But he added there needs to be patience from backroom staff and fans if good times are to return.

Dent said: “Whoever takes over will need a lot of time and money to turn things around.

“What everyone has to get into their minds though is change overnight.”
