A STRIKE from Mark Goldsworthy deep into injury time saw Helston Athletic grab a dramatic 3-2 win at Wadebridge Town.

The forward fired the ball home in the 94th minute to complete a comeback on Saturday after the Blues had gone 2-0 down.

Nick Dowling's penalty and a header from Connor Mewton had sent Wadebridge in front with 20 minutes to go.

But Athletic, who not deserved to fall behind, did not give up and pulled off a remarkable result with Charlie Young and substitute Jason Robertson scoring before Goldsworthy finished the job off.

Helston's manager Sid Taylor was pleased with the determination shown by his team to get the result.

Taylor said: “The game started really well for us and we were playing the best football we have for quite a while, but it was looking like one of days when the ball just wouldn't go in for us.

“But we showed a lot of character to keep going after going 2-0 down when we deserved better.

“Games like that can change your season for good or for worse and hopefully it can prove to be a turning point for us as we can take a lot of heart from it.”

Going into the match, Athletic had lost three out of their previous four South West Peninsula League West ties.

They did produce a bright first half though creating several chances, but were squandered by poor finishing and also neat work by home goalkeeper Ben Hurst.

It appeared the day would be another frustrating one for the Blues when on the hour mark and against the flow of play Town took the lead.

Nick Hurst burst into the box but was brought down unfairly, with Dowling slotting the penalty past James Wignall.

Mewton doubled the lead in the 70th minute as he rose up to meet Giles Reynolds' cross and nodded home from close range.

But if the hosts thought Athletic would wilt, they were soon proved wrong.

Hugh Howlett supplied a through ball for Young who made no mistake in making it 2-1 with 76 minutes on the clock.

Then with just a minute of normal time remaining, the equaliser came as Howlett's cross found Robertson's head and he sent it past Hurst.

Athletic grabbed the ball out of the net and looked for a winner, although they still needed Wignall to make a good save from a one-one-one situation with Dan O'Hagan.

Then the moment fell for Goldsworthy to grab the third as he raced into the box and from an angle cracked a shot on target which went in despite Hurst getting a hand to it.
