ADMINISTRATORS of the South West Peninsula League have said they might consider setting up their own reserve teams division.

Committee members released a statement on Friday saying they can see the benefits of starting up such a league in the future should the opportunity arise.

It comes after concerns were raised by several clubs after the Devon & Exeter League announced plans to run a step seven division.

In the proposals, only first teams would be admitted to the league which would start next season if approved by the Football Association.

The topic was discussed the SWPL board at their most meeting earlier this month in Saltash.

A statement released by the committee said: “The board’s view was that it fully supported the current format, where it’s clubs’ reserve teams participated in the various local league and in turn supported those competitions by paying fees and providing good facilities which are of benefit to the local leagues and local clubs.

“The SWPL has a good working relationship with the local leagues and we are mindful of the potential impact this could have on them.

“However, if such a reserve team division is going to be implemented anyway by one of those local leagues, the board’s viewpoint was that it could see the benefits of the SWPL running their own reserve division or divisions.

“In particular this would be financially much better for the clubs in terms of saving on league subscriptions and insurance and also much easier for clubs with regards to player registrations and transfers.

“All fixtures would also be under one league’s remit, which would be of benefit as clubs would know that all grounds the reserves played away at would be of a high standard.”

According to the committee, several more member clubs have expressed an interest in the reserve league idea, although they refused to identify which teams these are.
