LIFE is looking good for Penryn Athletic at the moment as they sit at the top of the South West Peninsula League West Division.

Their elevation to the summit of the table came on Saturday after they recorded a second consecutive away win against a team also in the upper echelons of the league.

Having beaten Helston Athletic 4-1 the previous week, Steve Jewell and Peter Davey’s men recorded the same score at Trungle Parc as they took on Mousehole, who start the day three places below their opponents in fifth spot.

Proceedings had a physical feel as the hosts used stern tactics to try and dominate Athletic with their strength, although it would not have an effect on the final score.

This approach has left Athletic with a couple of injuries problems going into the next few games Dave Blizzard and Ryan Chinn both being forced off with little protection from referee Alan Hoon.

The latter’s departure from the match after 22 minutes saw Luke Brabyn moved into the middle of the park, where he made an immediate impact.

Just three minutes later he helped open the scoring as after Tyler Cooke halted a Mousehole attack, Brabyn went on an unstoppable twisting and turning run through the heart of the defence.

He reached the byline and lofted the ball to the back post where the ever energetic Kevin Lawrence connected with a header which was as clean as a whistle to make it 1-0.

Mousehole’s enthusiasm was destroyed by this goal as the visitors stayed on top for the rest of the half.

Brabyn then added a second to the score just after the interval as he took on all comers with a fantastic run from the halfway line before slotting home.

But despite looking down and out, the hosts mustered a spirited reply to grab a large sway of the proceedings as they looked more controlled and full of purpose.

Penryn were getting stuck into the task as well and in the 70th minute Ryan Martt was booked for a foul on home skipper Mark Vercesi.

From the resulting free kick, player-manager and ex-Newcastle United and Sheffield United man Wayne Quinn found striker Bradley Wills in the box who hit a shot which deflected into the net.

With an edgy finish set up, Athletic showed their mettle five minutes later to reopen the two goal advantage as Blizzard broke out of defence before sending Lawrence free to cut the ball back to Scott Palmer to tap in.

A great result was completed by Athletic in the sixth minute of a lengthy period of injury time when Lawrence robbed the defence of the ball and raced in to score.
