A DIZZYING first half display left Falmouth Town disorientated and knocked out of the Cornwall Senior Cup.

The Ambers travelled to Poltair Park to face St Austell who are on a remarkable run of form as they went into the second round tie having won all 17 of their previous matches.

They showed why they have dominated the Westcountry football scene in the first 45 minutes as they raced into a 5-0 lead with some brilliant goals to boot.

With their slick movement and passing, the Saints left a spirited Town side for dead and were able to shift into cruise control in the second half.

Falmouth did spend time in the host's final third, but whenever they got forward, a lack of quality in front of goal coupled with their opposition's knack of getting men back to cut out chances saw them leave with nothing.

Liam Eddy opened the scoring with just 90 seconds on the clock as Ambers' goalkeeper Jamie Gray cleared poorly, with Chris Reski putting through the rapid striker.

Gray nearly made amends by getting a firm hand to Eddy's shot, but it did not do enough to divert it away from the net.

It nearly became 2-0 when Martin Watts sent a free kick from about 25 yards out and on the right hand side crashing off the bar, with Gray making a superb save as Eddy got in on the rebound.

Moments later though, the left-back did double the lead with a spectacular effort from a similar distance on his favoured side of the pitch which crashed into the bottom right hand corner of the net in the 26th minute.

This appeared to pull the plug out of Town's defence and eight minutes later a inch perfect cross from Watts found Jared Sims' head and he nodded the ball home.

Reski added the fourth in when he kept the ball away from Ambers defenders despite being surrounded by them before picking his spot to curl in a beautiful right footed strike.

Then another long range effort, this time from Ollie Brokenshire, in the 41st minute completed the misery for the visitors with his shot from 30 yards clipping the post before going in.

By this point, St Austell had scored four times inside 15 minutes and the job was done.

In the second half, with both teams making substitutions and easing off the ante, the tempo dropped as did the excitement factor.

Rob Wearne did get what was Falmouth's best chance of the match to score two minutes after the break, but despite shooting past Jason Chapman, his effort was blocked by Dan Lean who slide in to cover up behind his goalkeeper.

A positive which could be taken away by Town came from their debutant full-back Nick Hurst who made some decent runs upfield and was at the fore in most of the attacks they made.

The match also saw the first game back for former club captain Tom Whipp who recently rejoined the Ambers after spells at Bodmin Town and Torpoint Athletic.

It was also a chance for the side to say hello to Harry Evans who started for the Saints after the forward left Bickland Park last month.
