LUKE Wort fired four goals in for Wendron United on Saturday as they battled to a 5-3 victory at Perranwell.

The visitors had gone 3-1 up before their hosts pegged them back with strikes from Matthew Lane and Chris Shackley levelling the Jolly's Combination League match up.

However, Dron were able to go up a gear again to regain the lead and take three points back with them to Underlane.

Manager Paul Murray was happy with the victory in tough conditions.

Murray said: “The pitch was a bit mashed up and it was a difficult match to play.

“It was a scrappy game, but at the same time we always looked in control.

“We did look to be muddling through, but we just had the job done.”

A good start was made by the away side and after eight minutes Justin Searle gave them the lead as he cut in from the right wing before slotting it past Darren Meagor.

Perranwell got an equaliser though when Dron's defence allowed a long ball to bounce inside the box, which was picked up on by Lane who poked it home from close range.

Dron woke up and kicked back into gear with Wort scoring twice before half time, first tapping in after Mike O'Neil squared a pass across the six yard box and then getting on the end of a Steve Brewer cross.

In the second, the visitors made a slower start and this sloppiness let Perranwell back in as Shackley's strike from the edge of the penalty area got past John Row.

Lane then got his second equaliser of the day shortly afterwards when he headed home from a corner.

It took a bit of spark from striker Wort to get Dron back ahead when he powered a free kick just outside the area into the net before wrapping proceedings up in the final few minutes with a left footed strike.

On Saturday, Dron welcome local rivals and fellow title chasers Mullion to Underlane in the Combination League Cup quarter finals.

With the sides separated by just four points at the top of the league table, Murray said whoever wins will get a boost in their campaign.

“Quarter finals are difficult anyway,” he said.

“But this one will be particularly interesting when you consider where we both are in the league.

“We have already played them twice this season, losing once and drawing the other time, and I feel whoever gets a win this time will have a psychological edge going into the final stages of the season.”
