GOAL machine Mark Goldsworthy said he would be happy to stop scoring for the rest of the season – but only if Helston Athletic win the league.

The 23-year-old got his fifth hat-trick of the season as the Blues won 3-0 at Dobwalls in the South West Peninsula League West on Saturday.

He now has 44 goals in all competitions this season, taking him just 12 behind his previous best with a possible 12 games remaining for Athletic, should they make the Cornwall Charity Cup final.

Having set himself a target of 40 for the season, Goldsworthy admitted he does now have an eye on his record after reaching his original goal.

However, he added if it means Athletic win the league and get promoted, he would not mind seeing his current tally stay as it is.

Goldsworthy told the Packet: “With ten league games left and a couple hopefully in the cup, I believe I can get to 56 again, although it will be very tough.

“I am just taking it game-by-game though and if someone said to me you won’t score again this season but Athletic will win the title, I’d take it straight away.

“With the last few games of the season coming, I think belief is there to get the results we need to achieve our targets.

“When we had that brilliant start to the season, I think we did get a bit complacent, but we have come through that now and everyone’s confidence is back to where it was at the beginning of the campaign.”

Saturday’s league meeting came just a fortnight after sides clashed at the same ground in the quarter finals of the Charity Cup, a match Athletic won 4-2.

It took just five minutes for Goldsworthy, who scored twice on February 7, to get off the mark this time round against Dobwalls when a through ball was supplied to him.

Goalkeeper Dean Smith came rushing out, but Goldsworthy kept his nerve and slotted it into the home side’s net.

He struck again just before the half time and break before completing the treble in the 65th minute from the penalty spot.

Dobwalls did have chances to get back into the clash, but fine saves from Jason Robertson kept out the hosts.

Away trips await Athletic in their next two games, heading to Bude Town on Saturday before travelling to fellow title chasers St Dennis a week later.
