HELSTON Athletic’s return to the top of the South West Peninsula League West table has left their manager Sid Taylor delighted.

The Blues moved back into first spot on Saturday after they defeated Holwsorthy 4-1 while Sticker could only draw 4-4 at home with Wadebridge Town.

With two games in hand over their nearest rivals, Athletic could stretch the gap further should they pick up maximum points, although third placed St Dennis are also lurking in the promotion chase.

Despite heading the pack again, Taylor told the Packet he is trying to keep the team’s feet firmly on the ground.

Taylor said: “Seeing us win and results go for us in other games was really pleasing.

“When I spoke to the lads about the situation three or four games ago when we put ourselves in a good position and it was very tight at the top, I told them to just to take each game as it comes and that is the same attitude I want now.

“We just have to get the three points game-by-game, tick the boxes and not look too far ahead of ourselves, as that can be dangerous.

“We have gone ten games unbeaten in the league so we are hitting form at the business end of the season, but we have to stay focused.”

In their four league games since Boxing Day, Holsworthy have not lost any of them in a run which has seen the side move gradually move away from a relegation battle.

With their renewed confidence, the Magpies took the lead at Kellaway Park as Jacob Nosworthy made the most of a defensive mix up after 15 minutes.

They tried to stifle their hosts for the remainder of the half, but two minutes before the break a penalty was awarded to Athletic as Mikey Davies was bundled over in the box.

Top goalscorer Mark Goldsworthy stepped up and converted the spot kick.

In the second half, the Blues kept upping the tempo and their pressure finally produced a second in the 70th minute when Davies’ cross was nodded home by Charlie Young.

Another header made it 3-1 when central defender Hugh Howlett got on the end of a corner before substitute Andrew Westgarth was set up by Goldsworthy with five minutes left.

Saturday’s game was the first of five at home on the trot for Athletic and next up is Wadebridge Town.
