DEVASTATION was etched on Penryn Athletic faces at the full time whistle on Wednesday night as they lost the Charity Cup Final to St Dennis.

Chris Brown's curled effort in the 78th minute was followed by Carl Rickard's goal on the counter attack deep into injury time at Treyew Road as the Saints won 2-0 to lift the trophy.

It was an evening which looked to promise so much for Athletic as they created dozens of chances throughout the clash, only to find Saints' goalkeeper Brett Allen in superb form.

The stopper made several excellent saves during the match which kept Athletic at bay and helped his side to victory as they showed a more clinical touch in front of goal late on.

His best save came in the 55th minute when he tipped over Kevin Lawrence's stinging shot just inside the box, getting both gloves to the ball.

Ed Wilton went close to opening the scoring in the 17th minute when his bullet header was pushed away by Allen and not afterwards, Josh Burton saw a shot on the angle well saved.

Allen's brilliance was called upon again six minutes before the break when Dave Broglino ran onto the ball after St Dennis' Kyle Friendship suicidally let it roll past him, but his back was salvaged by his goalie who pushed the shot onto the post.

Athletic continued their dominance in the second half but still could not breach Allen's defences, with Burton and Luke Brabyn seeing chances saved.

then the sucker punch came with 12 minutes remaining as Rickard's free kick was nodded away, but Brown got onto the ball and sent his effort from just outside the area past Chris Symons.

Gung ho tactics were used by Athletic from here on in as they desperately looked for the goal they deserved, but the game was up in the third minute of added on time when Rickard shrugged off Blizzard and with just Symons to beat, chipped it over the goalie.

Less than a minute later the match was over and St Dennis had won the cup in smash and grab style.
