A BUZZ is reverberating around Kellaway Park according to Helston Athletic boss Sid Taylor - and it is not just because the floodlights have gone up.

As the redevelopment of the Blues' ground continues ahead of their debut in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division, new faces have been added to the squad with striker Matt Buchan joining from Wendron United.

Also joining the club is Stuart Cooke, a midfielder with experience of playing in Cambridgeshire's Kershaw Premier League, and Fraser Patterson has also been given the chance to show his worth with the first team, having been a star for the reserves last season.

The trio were given a run out in the club's opening pre-season friendly against Mousehole last night, played after the Packet went to press, along with Phil Cattran, signed from Mullion last month.

With the new recruits to the squad, Taylor said the excitement is building around the club.

Taylor told Packet Sport: "What we have decided to do with the budget we've got is to promote younger players and give them a chance in the first team.

"Fraser has been involved with our reserves and Matt is a player who played in our youth set-up along with playing at Wendron, so I know they both have bags of potential and in training their attitudes have been great and both have been willing to learn from senior players.

"Stuart is down here with the navy and came to us following a recommendation from a former player, Frazer Cumming, and he is a very strong midfielder who has shown us he can hold his own on the ball.

"I'm delighted to have Phil onboard as well, especially as I tried to sign him last year, because he is one of the best talents around Cornwall and hopefully he'll prove that in a Helston shirt during the season."

All of this has taken place while the club's ground refurbishment continues, with the latest development being the erecting of floodlights.

After being put up, the lights were tested for the first time last week.

"It is all coming together nicely," Taylor said.

"We have all been watching the ground get better and better each week and it really looks like a proper ground now with the floodlights and perimeter fencing.

"There are still a few things to be completed including the dugouts, but once it is all done, I know the facilities will be great and it really is exciting to see the work getting done."
