SID Taylor said his Helston Athletic are ready to compete in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division.

The Blues will see the curtain rise on a historic season when St Blazey travel down to the new look Kellaway Park on Saturday for their first game in the league.

Last season's SWPL West champions have never played in the competition's top division before and their opponents this weekend finished in the top half in 2014/15.

Taylor told the Packet the club's target remains to avoid relegation, but feels the team can make waves in the league.

"I have every faith in my squad can do well," Taylor said.

"Our first opposition are an old club of mine where I had a few good years and we know they have good pedigree in the competition.

"But I don't think the players will be worried going into the match as I think they all cannot wait to get started.

"Every point will be valuable to us and we'll have to change our mindset a bit because we won't be as many winnable games compared to last season, but I believe ultimately we'll be fine."

Work has nearly been finished on their home ground with floodlights installed and the new grandstand delivered to the club.

The last few touches are also being made to the fencing around the pitch and dugouts to replace the old ones are also set to arrive soon.

With the renovations going on, Taylor said it has only added to the excitement of the upcoming season.

Taylor said: "It has been fun seeing the refurbishments take place bit-by-bit.

"The finishing touches are being made to the ground and I truly believe we have one of the best grounds in the county now.

"It is creating even more buzz around the town and when we look to recruit new players, they'll see the ground and go "wow, I want to play here"."

Ahead of Saturday's clash, the club's all-time leading goalscorer Mark Goldsworthy faces a fitness test after being unavailable for their Charity Vase game against Tavistock on Sunday, which they lost 2-0.

However, Ben Stidwell and Keegan McPhilbin are expected to make a return to the first team squad for the match, which kicks-off at 3pm.
