Helston 1
Last season’s champions of the East and West divisions of the South West Peninsula League, Helston and Tavistock, met on Saturday at Kellaway Park .
The two sides were very evenly matched on the day, and will probably accept that a draw is a fair result.
Helston wasted no time in taking the lead, Jamie Thirkle firing in to put the home side ahead after just nine minutes.
The visitors would equalize at a crucial time in the match though, just before half time winning a corner from which Sam Chitty managed to get the equalizer.
Both sides came out looking for the winner in the second half, not content to play out the draw. Despite several efforts, including penalty shouts on both sides and a Phil Cattran strike hitting the crossbar for Helston, the score remained even.
The two teams have both made a big impression since their promotion, and will have the opportunity to renew their rivalry at the end of the month, when they are due to meet again.
Helston will next play away to St Stephens Borough at the weekend in the first round of the Cornwall Senior Cup.
