St Stephens Borough 2

Helston Athletic 6

Controversy reigned in this Senior Cup first round tie, as St Stephens were denied an upset victory when Helston scored a goal which caused much debate.

The visitors took the lead when Jamie Thompson struck a well-placed free kick into the net, but Borough hit back quickly with a scruffy goal eventually put in by Dominic Sanchez-Cabello.

Dave Ackrell then put the hosts ahead with a sublime finish when through on goal. However, it is what happened next that the tie will be remembered for.

With 80 minutes gone, was put in the Borough net, but appeared to come off the hand of Lewis Ellis last.

The referee, who initially disallowed the goal, changed his mind and awarded the goal following protestations from the Helston players and a conversation with his assistant, on the basis that Ellis could not have got out of the way of the ball.

The aggrieved St Stephens players looked demoralised by this decision, and it showed in their play. Despite taking the game to extra time, Helston were ruthless in finishing the job, Dan Stidwell putting the hosts to the sword by scoring four goals and putting the visitors through to the second round of the cup.

Helston next take on Falmouth Town in the Walter C Parsons League Cup on Friday night.
