FALMOUTH TOWN set up a third round tie with Penzance after they crushed Combination League side Hayle 8-0 in their Cornwall Senior Cup match at Bickland Park on Saturday, writes Matt Friday.

Town led 3-0 at the break via a Marcello Jones double and Joe Cooper’s header, before Harry Clarke, Luke Brabyn, Jordan Annear, James Miller and Lewis Pellow all netted after half-time.

A heavily depleted Falmouth side took to the field with eight players unavailable, but it was the familiar face of Jones who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute with a superb 25-yard free-kick.

Town were given a scare on the half-hour mark when Hayle’s Liam Mooney slipped past two defenders and slotted the ball past Harry McMellon, but Cooper got back to clear it off the line.

The hosts recovered to double their lead on 34 minutes when former Hayle player Cooper headed Jones’ corner past Adrian Lamb, with Jones converting a penalty to extend their lead three minutes later.

It was all too easy for Falmouth and they went 4-0 up seven minutes after half-time when Clarke picked up the ball on the edge of the box and curled it into the bottom corner.

Four became five on the hour when Brabyn’s shot found its way into the net, and five became six when Jordan Annear used his heel to divert Tom Annear’s free-kick past the helpless Lamb.

The game then threatened to boil over when Ryan Martt was the victim of a two-footed tackle, with the home dugout incensed that only a yellow card was shown to the Hayle man.

Assistant manager Miller then came off the bench to score Town’s seventh from the spot with eight minutes to go, before Pellow slotted in from a tight angle to complete the scoring.

Falmouth: H McMellon, D Blizzard, T Annear, J Ward, J Cooper, R Martt, L Brabyn (J Miller 75), H Clarke, M Jones (S Pickup 57), J Annear, A Westgarth (L Pellow 65).

Packet Pick: Marcello Jones – was involved in all three goals before half-time and was Town’s biggest threat for the time he was on the pitch.

Falmouth’s next match is a trip to second-placed Tavistock on Saturday.
