WENDRON United’s experience helped them through their Combination League Cup semi final – according to their manager Paul Murray.

Dron came up against a Hayle side who had won three of their last four games and who came out fighting on Sunday at Porthleven’s Gala Parc, with the pace of Barnaby Dagger and George Holman looking threatening.

Despite a somewhat shaky start, once Dron got going there was simply no stopping them and the the Greens’ danger was eradicated with Justin Miles, Luke Wort, Ryan Tresidder and Matt Rose all on target.

A clash with Ludgvan on Easter Sunday now awaits Dron and Murray feels his side’s runs to the Cornwall Senior Cup quarter finals for two seasons in a row helped them.

Murray said: “We know we can compete with anyone from our league or above and it comes as no great surprise that if we work hard and play well then we’ll beat anyone.

“I thought the lads deserved it and after the opening 20 minutes or so when Hayle came at us, they tired and we outplayed them from there.”

Hayle, nine places below their opponents, looked to work over Dron early on with speed, but even with their possession they could not create anything clear cut to trouble goalkeeper John Row.

His opposite number, Scott Halliday, was called into action first when he made a fantastic reflex save from Miles’ bullet header after a well taken corner from the right by Tresidder.

Dron had been struggling to string things together in the midfield during the game’s first quarter with passing often going astray.

They were nearly made to pay in the 25th minute when after losing possession near the centre circle, Dron’s keeper had to push Kane Williams’ shot from outside the penalty area wide.

This appeared to act as the moment where Murray’s side woke up and began a telling period where they got in charge of the play and Justin Searle found two great chances to score.

Wort put him through with a wonderful 35 yard pass only for the winger to hit a weak shot before Searle broke down the right and sent an effort just past the far post as Halliday rushed out to him.

With the pressure they had built, Dron deserved a half time lead and their reward finally came with the last kick of the opening 45 minutes.

James Rowberry was sent tumbling over in the box and Dave Dobson pointed to the spot, allowing Miles to step up and thump the kick in off Halliday’s right hand post.

The plug was pulled out of Hayle and on the hour mark, Halliday and Zack Williams got in a mix-up with a high ball going into the box letting Dron’s top goalscorer Wort to slot home.

Madeley went close to making it 3-0 when his header from a corner went just over before his defensive colleague Tresidder put the third in as he smashed a volley on the turn past Halliday.

Cruise control was put on by Dron for the final 15 minutes as Hayle knew the chase was up and Searle saw another chance get spurned as he fizzed a shot off the post.

Just as the match was drifting to a close, it became 4-0 when Rose fired home an effort after substitute Brett Andrew nudged the ball to him after a long free kick went into the penalty area.

Consolation found Hayle in fortunate fashion in the fourth minute of added on time when Charlie Davis’ weak header back to Row was latched onto by Dagger who then lobbed the goalkeeper.
