WAYNE Hughes wants his Falmouth Town side to take a more professional approach to their play in order to close out games.

On Saturday the Ambers drew 1-1 against Elburton Villa at Bickland Park in the South West Peninsula League Premier clash which the hosts will have expected to win.

Ed Timmons had put Town ahead in the 30th minute with his first goal for the club since returning to them a fortnight ago from Illogan RBL.

But a mix up at the back between goalkeeper Jason Peters and defender Jamie Webb six minutes later allowed Villa, who are just one place above the league’s bottom spot, to get an equaliser through Steve Sims’ strike.

With a trip to Bovey Tracey, who are at the foot of the table, up next for Town, Hughes said he wants the players to appreciate winning by a goal is fine.

Hughes told the Packet: “What I really want the lads to realise is that getting a 1-0 win is enough in any game.

“If you go ahead in the game, you don’t need to score a second, third or fourth time.

“At the moment though we have a problem where we take the lead and then get a bit excited and look for more goals, which leads to mistakes.

“We start taking quick throw-ins and passing it around our own penalty area and our concentration level drops while our poor decision making goes up.

“The team need to be a bit more professional and learn to see results out.”

He added the problems might be caused by the exuberance of youth with the Town squad containing several young players.

Although this may have ultimately led to the side only bagging a point against Villa, Hughes said it is good to see.

“What I have always wanted is to try and install in the players is to enjoy their playing,” he said.

“We have also been trying to get them to play the ball out from back, which in a funny way actually cost us on Saturday.

“Even though the lads should have just gone with booting the ball up the park, I cannot have a go at them for doing what we have been hammering into them over the last couple of months and it can be hard to break away from that sometimes when conditions change.

“The attitude from the lads has been fantastic and they have to keep it up.”

Hughes also confirmed to the Packet he has made an approach for Newquay midfielder Jack Bray-Evans.

He said: “He is a really good creative player who I would love to have in the squad here.

“I’m not sure whether we’ll get him for this season or next year, but I’ll be happy to get him in.”
