JUST a week after being thrashed 6-0 by the same side, Falmouth Town made the perilous trip to high flying Ivybridge for another South West Peninsula League Premier clash.

The Ambers were hoping to make some kind of improvement from their previous effort and in some ways they did, but it came in the form of conceding one less this time round.

Town held out until the last minute of the first half when Mike Smith broke the deadlock, which led to the floodgates opening after the interval with Joe Truelove, Jack Alexander, Sam Marker and Luke Brown all scoring.

Rain fell over the Erme Valley pitch in what was the host’s last match of the season and the ball fizzed across the surface during the afternoon.

It seemed like the visitors had managed to get into the half time break without being breached, but as the clock ticked round to the 45th minute, Mark Berry’s corner was flicked in at the near post by Smith, who scored twice at Bickland Park seven days earlier.

Ivy soon doubled their lead as three minutes after the interval, Truelove got on the end of a move sparked by Smith down the right wing before he cut the ball back to his team-mate to fire a shot past Jason Peters.

Town held off their host’s advances for another 28 minutes before a mad spell saw three goals finish the game off in quick succession.

First, Alexander got to the rebound before any defender after he had forced a save from Peters in a one-on-one in the 76th minute.

A penalty was awarded to the Ivy shortly afterwards when Lee Doel’s shot was handled in the area by Nick Hurst, with Marker taking over the duties from regular taker Berry, who had already been substituted, and he made the most of the occasion to bag his first goal of the season.

Brown rounded proceedings off with eight minutes to go as he sent a shot from an acute angle past Peters, who was beaten at his near post.

On Monday, Town finish their season at Camelford.
