ANDREW Westgarth said he is very excited at the prospect of being the boss of his hometown club.

On Thursday, Falmouth Town confirmed the 30-year-old had agreed to take over as player-manager at the South West Peninsula League Premier club for the 2015/16 season.

It will be Westgarth's first managerial position and comes just under a week after Wayne Hughes announced his resignation from the role, as revealed by Packet Sport on Sunday morning.

Gary Pascoe, who took charge of the side on Tuesday night during their 4-1 defeat at home to Truro City in the Aubrey Wilkes Memorial Trophy match, will be staying on as assistant manager.

In his first interview since taking over, Westgarth told the Packet management was something he had always considered moving into.

Westgarth said: "I am excited about the job in hand and I'm looking forward to taking charge of my hometown club.

"I think that anyone that really knows me would not be shocked by my decision as I have always had an interest in doing it, especially with my dad (Mickey) having managed a couple of clubs before.

"My phone has been going off non-stop over the last few days and I've managed to speak to the majority of the players and everyone has given me their full backing.

"Wayne did a great job here and left the club in a good position, but like anyone we'll be looking to better ourselves next season on and off the pitch, so anything we can do to better our performance last season will be good."

Westgarth's first game in charge will be against Helston Athletic, the club he recently left to rejoin the Ambers after a season away from Bickland Park, in the Dave Gardner Trophy tomorrow.

The match at Kellaway Park kicks-off at 3pm.
