LADY Luck was not with Falmouth Town on Saturday as they started their 2015/16 South West Peninsula League Premier campaign with a loss.

The Ambers fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Elburton Villa, who like Town struggled last season and were one of three teams to finish below them in the table.

Things could have been different though for the hosts though, as during the first half striker Glen Squires hit the woodwork twice while Rob Wearne had a shot blocked on the line.

Assistant manager Gary Pascoe, who was standing in for the absent player-manager Andrew Westgarth, said Town were unlucky, but have to move on.

Pascoe said: “The result was disappointing as in all honesty, we should have been out of sight by half time.

“Ryan Barnes only had one save to make in the first half and if we had gone in 3-0 or 4-0 up, I don’t think you could complain.

“But it didn’t happen and we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal, whereas Elburton had two chances and they both went in.

“But the positive to take out of this is that we created plenty of chances and we have talented players who can convert them, so we just need to get firing.”

Disruption was caused to the fixture as Villa got stuck in traffic travelling down from Plymouth, forcing the kick-off time to be pushed back by an hour.

Once the game did get under way, Town started brightly but were unable to capitalise on any chances.

More frustration was felt in the second half when Dom Bryant’s half volley took a couple of deflections en route to Town’s goal.

Squires got a positive response in as his shot levelled the game, but a fantastic diving header from Aaron Hulme saw the points go to Villa.

Town travel to St Blazey on Saturday before hosting Saltash United on Tuesday night.
