SMASH and grabs do not come more dramatically than the one from Vospers Oak Villa on Saturday against Helston Athletic.

The Blues were condemned to their first South West Peninsula League West defeat in 12 matches when Lewis Young’s strike in the fourth minute of added on time handed all three points to the visitors.

At the time, Helston had been pushing for a winner with the scores level at 1-1 after Charlie Young had equalised after his namesake had put Vospers in front midway through the second half.

Up until the opener it had been a stodgy affair with windy conditions making life difficult for both sides with neither Jason Robertson or Ian Evans being forced to work between the sticks.

But the final 25 minutes brought the afternoon to life with Athletic seemingly in charge until the last few kicks of the game as the visitors secured their seventh win in a row.

Blues boss Sid Taylor admitted losing this manner was “disappointing”.

Taylor said: “It was a typical snatch and grab in my opinion as there was only one team who looked like they wanted to win and that was us.

“Vospers were wasting time and we were throwing people forward, but then they caught us on the counter attack.

“Fair play to them they caught us out and the lad finished it well but I thought we were by far the better team.”

With conditions as they were at Kellaway Park, proceedings were never going to be the most entertaining and it took 15 minutes before a shot was attempted on goal when Jordan Hogan’s wind assisted effort from 30 yards sailed over.

Vospers had been in charge of the opening exchanges as they pressed Athletic high up the pitch forcing the hosts into several mistakes on the ball.

The latter stages of the half though belonged to Helston as they started producing the style of football which has seen them move to top spot in the league.

Athletic sieged upon Vospers’ goal with captain Jamie Thomson getting the best chance in the 27th minute when he was found free at the back post by Mark Goldsworthy’s pass.

However, Thomson took a touch when he should have taken a shot and saw the ball bobble away from him before misfiring his effort wide.

Pressure continued mounting from Athletic in the second half but they were limited to a single opportunity when Goldsworthy’s excellent work down the left wing saw him supply Young in the box, but the midfielder curled a shot just wide.

All the effort was being put in by Athletic and they seemed more likely to score, but in the 67th minute fortunes changed dramatically as Vospers took a surprise lead.

A free kick by their own penalty area was thumped up by Dan Worth for Steve Blackburn who made a run down the right.

He cut the ball back to Young who slipped his marker Hugh Howlett before slamming the ball past a helpless Robertson, sparking wild celebrations from his team-mates.

Taylor made a couple of changes to freshen things up with Matt Lloyd and Andrew Westgarth going on and the latter had an affect moments after coming on.

The forward got on the end of a poor clearance by Vospers but saw his edge of the area shot deflected.

With the ball looping up in the air, his Blues colleague Young reacted quickest and showed great instincts to send a header past Evans at a tight angle.

This score prompted another siege on Vospers goal from Athletic just like they had done in the first half.

In the next attack after the equaliser, Evans made a hash of collecting the ball and Goldsworthy looked to pounce on the error, but was bundled over by the goalkeeper.

Appeals flew out to referee Alan Hoon for what looked a stonewall penalty but the man in black turned them away much to the disgruntlement of home players and fans.

More agony awaited Athletic a few minutes later when Tom Russell hit the post as rebounded a shot from Lloyd which Evans spilled in the six yard box.

A big finish was brewing but the ending which did happen was not as everyone expected.

More attacking football was being played by the Blues in the final few minutes while Vospers looked to squeeze out a point.

Then out of nowhere in the fourth minute five added on, a clearance at the back found Hogan who spun on a sixpence to set off towards goal.

He passed to Young who managed to get past Howlett before sending a shot across Robertson and into the net, sparking even bigger celebrations than his opener.
