HELSTON Athletic will have to make do with just one trophy potentially this season now after being knocked out of the Charity Cup semi finals.

Carl Rickard pounced on a defensive error in the 117th minute to send the Blues crashing out after the scores after 90 minutes remained level at 1-1.

Athletic will feel particularly gutted by the result as for the majority of the match they looked to be the better and more creative team at Bickland Park.

But just like their opponents, they gave the ball away too much in the midfield and were unable to get the required service to their leading striker Mark Goldsworthy on the night.

Proceedings in the first half were scrappy with the sides currently battling for the South West Peninsula League West title both having one clear cut chance each as the match neared the interval.

Ash Stidwell nearly opened the scoring in the 42nd minute but his point blank header from a corner was well saved by Neil Mitchell before moments later, Rickard lobbed the ball onto Athletic's crossbar.

The Saints marksman did open the scoring inside the first minute of the second half when he turned and shot just outside the area on the volley, with the ball creeping into the right hand side the goal, much to Athletic's surprise.

Sid Taylor threw on Hedie Santos and Charlie Young to add life into the midfield and it did the trick with the latter scoring for the sixth game in a row when he tapped in at the back post after Goldsworthy sent the ball across the six yard box on the hour mark.

Athletic continued to push up and created more chances than their opponents, but the closest they came in the 79th minute when Santos saw his effort bounce of the bar.

The tie went into extra time and both goalkeepers had to pull off excellent saves to keep their side in contention, with Robertson doing brilliantly to get both hands on Ryan Hayhurst's diving header.

Mitchell was also called into action as he got fingertips onto Andrew Westgarth's header from about seven yards out after Jamie Thomson's free kick was nodded into the striker's path.

Just as things looked set for a penalty shoot-out though, Athletic's balloon was burst when Rickard leapt onto a defensive error from a throw in and fired a shot past Robertson, much to the Blues' shock.

Penryn Athletic await St Dennis in the final to be played on May 6.
