SID Taylor said he was pleased to finally see his Helston Athletic side defeat rivals Penryn Athletic this season.

The teams met for the third time in the 2014/15 campaign on Saturday as Kellaway Park played host to the sides in the Cornwall Senior Cup second round.

On the two previous matches from this season, Penryn have come out on top with 5-4 and 4-1 victories.

But at the third time of asking, second half strikes from Mark Goldsworthy and Jason Robertson saw the Blues achieve a 3-2 win to keep them in the competition.

Taylor said finally overcoming their rivals will provide a real boost to his side.

He said: “I am really pleased for the players as they really wanted to win this.

“We made a couple of changes to how we normally play as we put in wingers to nullify the threat they have on the flanks and it worked out for us.

“I think in general there is not a lot between us as sides, but on Saturday we were by far the better team.

“Recently we have been disappointed with ourselves in how we’ve played, but getting back-to-back wins is great, especially with one of them against a side like Penryn, so we’re getting back on track.”

With the visitors not having 12 players available due to injury or other commitments, Taylor added he believes the strength and depth of his squad shone through on Saturday.

“We had a couple of guys missing,” he said.

“But despite this, I was able to call on a few experience heads to come in and fill the gaps.

“I know Penryn had to use some players from their reserve team who aren’t as experienced, so it showed the strength we have here of a big squad and I was happy to be able to call on this.”

Next up for Athletic is a trip to face the University of Exeter in the Walter C Parson Cup third round on Saturday.

It will be the first time the two sides have faced each other and Taylor explained he and the players are looking forward to it on and off the pitch.

Taylor said: “It is quite exciting to go somewhere new.

“The lads said they would like to be drawn against a team like Exeter so they could have a night out.

“A few of us are staying down to enjoy ourselves and do a bit of team bonding as well.

“In Jowan Shainberg we do have someone who is a spy in the camp as he has played for them so I will be speaking to him this week to help us prepare.

“I won’t go too much into detail though as I think sometimes you can freighted yourself by doing that.”
