ANOTHER double was completed by Penryn Athletic as they defeated Liskeard Athletic for the second time this season.

When the sides met at Kernick Road on September 20, Steve Jewell’s team ran out 2-0 winners and in Saturday's return leg in the South West Peninsula League West, they got on the scoresheet twice again.

This time they had to work hard for the result with their hosts grabbing an equaliser between goals from Ryan Martt and Sean Johnson in the first half at Lux Park.

Going into the match, Liskeard had a seven match unbeaten record which had seen them climb up to sixth in the table. However, Penryn came out fighting and were in a confident mood having won their last four league games.

They looked to finish proceedings off early as they looked to cut apart Liskeard, but the visitors had to wait until the 31st minute to open the scoring.

The deadlock was finally broken when Ben Oliver got a touch to Ollie Moody’s well worked corner which allowed Martt to nip in and take advantage of an open goal.

Penryn hardly had time to consolidate though as Liskeard came straight back at them with Rob Cleveland giving defender Ryan Dunn a torrid time.

His work helped craft out a goal for the hosts as he sent the ball past Chris Symons, returning after a couple of games out injured, from 20 yards out.

Cleveland’s brother Tom almost sent the team 2-1 up within a minute with Symons forced into making a fine save, but from the next attack at the opposite end of the field, Penryn retook the lead.

Scott Palmer, playing back upfront after being forced to deputise for Symons between the sticks, put Kevin Lawrence through down the side of Liskeard’s penalty area.

The diminutive forward showed a great touch and sent a delightful ball to Johnson at the far post for him to neatly fire into the net.

In the second half, Liskeard revved up their play in search for an equaliser and get something out of the game with their skipper Sam Gilbert putting in an outstanding performance.

They sent everything forward and forced a ton of corners, but Liskeard could not compete with the defending of Oliver, David Blizzard and Russell May, who all did enough to help keep the hosts out.

Palmer nearly made it 3-1 to Penryn when he sent a free kick crashing off the crossbar and Luke Brabyn thought he should have been given a penalty after being tumbled over in the box, but referee Ian Roberts discarded the appeal.

Penryn have a heavy workload coming up over the next week with three games in five days.

On Saturday they travel to Dobwalls before hosting Holsworthy 48 hours later in the league, then on Wednesday they take on St Dennis in the Charity Cup Final at Treyew Road.
