WINNING the league is within reach of Penryn Athletic next season – according to joint-manager Peter Davey.

The club’s 2014/15 campaign came to an end last week when they lost the Charity Cup Final 2-0 at Truro City’s Treyew Road against St Dennis.

It was a disappointing end to a season which has seen the Kernick Road-outfit finish third in the South West Peninsula League West Division, with the squad impressing many onlookers during the year.

Along the way to finishing in the top three, Athletic took six points off champions Helston Athletic and second place side Vospers Oak Villa and also had the division’s sternness defence, conceding just 33 goals.

Speaking to the Packet, Davey who shares the managerial role at Athletic with Steve Jewell, said they will now look to kick on in 2015/16 and feels glory is achievable.

Davey said: “At the start of this season, we were looking at making the top three and winning a cup.

“We could have nicked second place with a win in our last league game, which we didn’t get, and made a cup final and played as well as we wanted to.

“It has been a decent campaign, but now we want to better that next season and that means winning the league, which is achievable for us.

“I’m not sure what the club’s aspirations would be if we won the league as promotion is a big financial commitment to make with all the extra travel, but we believe we can win it and that is what we’ll be aiming for.”

He went onto praise the squad for their efforts over the season, with Davey adding it is hoped the majority of the players will stay at Kernick Road.

Davey also said the coaching team are set to stay for another season and there is the prospect of former Bolton Wanderers and Arsenal manager Bruce Rioch continuing helping out with the club’s training.

“Steve, I and Dave Blizzard are happy to stay at the club if they want us to stay,” he said.

“We’ll have a chat about it soon and Bruce Rioch, who has been invaluable for us with his experience and help at training, has said he wants to have a chat with us, so we’ll see what he has to say.

“The only person who we are due to lose is Josh Burton who is going to the USA on a college scholarship, but we’d like to think we will keep everyone else.

“There is probably going to be a couple of others who go, as that is just what happens during pre-season, but we’ll try to bring in a couple of players to strengthen things up.

“I’m not sure who the new faces will be and it may even be a couple of guys from our second team, but we’ve got a bit of time to think about it.”
