Penryn 5, Illogan 2

PENRYN’S happy knack of scoring early goals ensured another comfortable victory in this Division 1 West Boxing Day derby on Saturday.

They were 3-0 up in 21 minutes at Kernick Road in a game that the hosts were glad to play after a wet week had cast doubts over whether the fixture would be played.

It was the visitors who had a great chance to open the scoring after five minutes when he pick-pocketed David Blizzard and ran through with only keeper Chris Symons to beat, but shot wide.

A costly miss it proved, as Penryn opened their account a minute later. Ollie Moody and Kevin Lawrence worked a shot corner to find skipper Ben Oliver and his header was fumbled into the net by keeper Jason Brookes.

The visiting keeper, a late replacement for Barrie-John Wyatt who signed for Helston Athletic last Wednesday, suffered more misery two minutes later when he was unable to keep out a speculative 30-yard shot from Ryan Chinn.

Fresh from their excellent win at Sticker the previous week, Illogan were in no mood to lie down and some rather over-zealous tackling earned bookings for Dan Richards and Simon Ellis.

Midway through the half the hosts made it three when Dave Broglino produced a controlled finish from the edge of the box.

Unlike recent weeks, however, Penryn did not have it all their own way. On the half hour, Richards eluded several defenders as he weaved across the box before striking a fine goal. inside Symons’ far post.

Illogan then enjoyed their best spell before half time, but the home defence held firm.

Penryn restored their three-goal advantage just before the hour when Ellis tripped Ryan Reeve inside the area and Scott Palmer crashed home the resulting penalty.

Ten minutes from time Penryn hit five when Luke Brabyn’s deep cross reached Lawrence, who poked it over the line at the far post.

There was still time for another consolation goal for Illogan, when Symons was unable to keep out Tyler Oliver’s long range 40-yard shot.,

assisted by the wind, sent Symons scrambling and despite his efforts to keep it out, the ball was
