GOALS in extra time from Harry Hook and Tom Bennett put Porthleven out of the Cornwall Senior Cup on Saturday at Dobwalls.

The Fishermen had taken the lead in the match but a missed penalty from Jordan Annear proved crucial as they feel to a 4-2 loss after 120 minutes in the second round clash.

Port reached the same stage last season before being stuffed 7-0 by Bodmin Town.

This time though they put in a much better performance as they travelled to Lantoom Park to face the side who like themselves are sat in the mid-table positions of the South West Peninsula League West.

Dan Thomas nearly sent Dennis Annear’s team into an early lead but his long range effort only just went wide of the post.

He would be involved in the opening goal though when his shot across the face of goal was fumbled by Dean Smith, with the ball being pounced on by Jamie Greet to knock home.

It could have made 2-0 not long afterwards when Dan Tarrant sent a header from a throw in by Tom Annear wide.

James Bartlett then had a great chance to equalise when he caught Tom Heywood in possession, but with just Benji Bryant to beat he fired his shot over.

Dobwalls did get back on level terms ten minutes into the second half when Steve Tapper’s pass found Ash Piggott in the box.

With the visiting defence reacting slowly, Piggott was allowed to turn and shoot the ball past Bryant.

However, six minutes later Port had the chance to regain the lead from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. But the younger of the Annear brother’s who has scored every spot-kick so far this season saw his effort saved by Smith, diving to his right.

Before this incident, Jed McCardie had nearly made it 2-1 with a stunning shot from 35 yards out, only for the goalkeeper to pull off a fantastic save to tip it over.

Rubbing salt in the wound, Dobwalls then won a penalty themselves four minutes later after the other Annear sibling was judged to have fouled Joe Eke with Matt Hawes converting from 12 yards out.

All seemed lost for Port but deep into injury time Heywood was able to get on the end a long throw in and set-up an extra period of 30 minutes.

Both sides were tiring by this point, but it was Dobwalls who struck in the second period of extra time to progress to the third round.

Bennett made a good run to set Hook up in the 110th minute with an empty net to aim at.

The creator of this goal then finished proceedings off with two minutes left when a mistake by substitute Dan Greet, who was playing despite recently breaking his toe, was leapt upon by the hosts.

Port return to league action on Saturday when they travel to third place Penryn Athletic.
