THINGS are looking up for Porthleven according to the club's new manager Phil Kellow as pre-season preparations begin.

Training started again at Gala Parc last night with the session being the first presided over by the former Perranwell, Falmouth Athletic and St Agnes boss since Dennis Annear's departure at the end of the 2014/15 season.

Since then, Kellow has been busy in the transfer market with Chris Tolley and Ryan Trathen joining from Penzance while Cornwall Under 18s goalkeeper and skipper James Wignell jumping ship from neighbours Helston Athletic.

The trio come to Port alongside the new boss' sons, Richard and Scott, plus another four or five players who Kellow has made approaches for.

With this activity going on, the Fishermen's manager believes it will all combine to produce a good campaign for them.

Kellow told the Packet: "There has been a bit of a transition period between my appointment and now, but I am really excited about the season coming up.

"Hopefully the new guys will improve the strength of the side and I am pleased with the signings made so far along with those in the pipeline, although I cannot say much more about them at this stage.

"James Wignell is a great signing and I think Helston shot themselves in the foot letting him go, Chris Tolley is a solid central midfielder and if Ryan can get fit, he will become an important player for us.

"The club is on good solid ground and the way I see things, the only way is up."

Departing Gala Parc, as revealed first by Packet Sport, are Tom and Jordan Annear who have both joined Newquay while Benji Bryant and Jed McCardie will be unavailable for most of 2015/16 as they will be at university.

Kellow said they will all be a loss to the side, but thinks there is more than enough around the club to fill the gaps, with midfielder Freddie Williams part of the plan.

"It is a big minus losing players like Tom and Jordan," he said.

"Tom was a good presence at the back and up front, Jordan scored more than half the goals last season so they are big boots to fill.

"But what I think you'll see this season is more of a team approach to things as I am looking to add experience to the talented young guys already here.

"I'm looking at keeping to the attacking style which Dennis deployed as it will suit the players who stay on and Freddie Williams will get the chance to play a bit further upfield compared to last year, as he has a lot of talent which could prove useful."

Before the season kicks-off, Port will participate in the Dave Gardner Trophy.
