SEVERAL fantastic saves from James Wignell helped Porthleven secure a 2-1 win over Millbrook in their opening game of the South West Peninsula League West season.

The teenager who signed from neighbours Helston Athletic during the summer was in fine form on his competitive debut for the Fishermen as he left visiting marksman Shaun Evans cursing his luck.

Freddie Williams and Ryan Trathen got on the scoresheet for Port at Gala Parc on what was a good day for the hosts, although a downside to it was provided when captain Dan Greet was forced off in the 47th minute.

It was later discovered the midfielder who has taken over leadership duties on the pitch had suffered a broken rib and will be out for around five weeks.

Port began the match with a quick pace which saw them get on top early on, culminating in the deadlock being broken by Williams eight minutes in as he chipped the ball over Jack Dixon after Jed McCardie's pass set him up.

Kirk Curey-Tibbett went close for the visitors as his long range effort went just over, but Port maintained their dominant streak in proceedings with Trathen going close after a great run by Jowan Shainberg opened up the Millers' defence.

Wignell made his first contribution of the day with an excellent point blank save from an Evans shot and then in the 25th minute, the home side's lead doubled.

Greet located Williams with a pass down the left wing which started a galloping run from the midfielder, leaving defenders for dead.

He cut inside the cut and as Dixon rushed off his line, Williams squared the ball to Trathen who had the easy task of scoring.

Just as things looked to be getting comfortable for Port, a mistake from Luke Hunter gave the ball away to Evans who slotted a strike past Wignell seven minutes before the break.

The start of the second half was similar to the first with Port attacking hard as Liam Hunter and McCardie both had shots brilliantly saved.

Evans looked to up the ante and find a way back in for Millbrook, but he was denied to a couple of fantastic stops by Wignell which left the striker and many in the crowd stunned.

McCardie looked to have added a third in the last minute, but his effort was chalked off for handball, while a debut was given to Chris Bullock, son of legendary Fishermen striker Craig.
