Constantine move into second

Constantine travelled to the Towans at Hayle on Saturday, where they were met by a heavy shower and some leaky covers - one end of the wicket seemed very wet while the other reasonably dry.

With this in mind skipper Scott Thompson decided they would bowl first, however with his lack of luck with the coin, he lost the toss and Constantine were put in to bat.

The Tine innings got off to a shaky start losing two wickets in the first two overs, firstly Tom Glover being dismissed like last week, with another smart catch, this time a caught and bowled a few inches off the floor. Scott Thomspon was next to go being controversially caught behind, after hitting his pad.

Richard Kellow and Darren Griffiths came to the crease and put on a mammoth partenership of over 150 runs, a long afternoon for Hayle seemed to be coming to an end when Kellow was finally caught on 102 at deep square leg after changing his bat - his innings consisted of nine fours, six sixes and an over of 27.

However Griffiths regained his missing form and batted on past Kellow’s score, getting to 127 in an innings of seventeen fours and three sixes, before also being caught. After being 11-2 after two overs, this partnership was vital as Constantine got to 283-4. Russell Weetch also passed the half century mark finishing unbeaten on 57. The pick of the Hayle bowling was J Rule taking two for 31 from six overs.

The Hayle reply started similarly to the first with Graham Griffiths bowling Luke Stucky in the third over, however after the early dismissal it never really looked like Hayle were going to chase the runs down, N Trestrail batted like a net session hitting the bad balls throughout the innings, Darren Griffiths bowled superbly to cap off a great performance taking three-38 from his allotted overs.

Needing wickets for points whilst racing against the overs and the weather it was time for skipper Thomspon to try something different and turned to Shaun Williams to bowl his first league spell of the season. Still in devestating form after his five wicket haul on the concrete wicket of Minorca, he tossed the ball up in the sun and cleaned bowled Trestrail for 119, he also picked up a second wicket in his third and final over.

Hayle reached 206 for six meaning Constantine picked up 18 points for their victory. With other results going Tine’s way, bowling Hayle out would have seen them top of the table for the week.

As it is Tine go second by a point with a long way to go in the season.
