Falmouth Golf club made it into the semi finals of the prestigious Cornwall President’s Cup with a performance full of character at West Cornwall on Sunday against a very useful Carlyon Bay team.

Falmouth won by the narrowest of margins, 5 to 4 in a very competitive and entertaining encounter, with the result hanging in the balance until the final putt on the final green.

It was left to Nick Chinn, watched by both teams and both sets of supporters, to roll the crucial putt down the full length of the tiered green to leave himself a tap-in to score the half required to see off a talented Carlyon Bay side, and send his team through to the semi finals where they will face Merlin Golf Club in February.

Carlyon were quickly out of the blocks with in-form Garry Rowett romping home by 5&4.

Falmouth responded well and achieved eventual success thanks to the excellent play of George Popperwell, who went on to win by 4&3, Scott Pedlar who won by the impressive margin of 6&4, and Paul Collins who played the shot of the day as he put his second to within an inch of the flag at the par four, stroke one ninth, on his way to winning by 4&3. Mark Trewin was also crucial to the effort as he gained a half.

The star performance went to young Ben Browning who was in control from the start displaying an excellent all round game and winning handsomely by 6 & 4.

The other Carlyon Bay successes were Martin Bullock and Tom Crocker who both won 1 up and Louis Gough and Chris Jackson who brought in half a point apiece.

Meanwhile back at Pennance. Saturday was a fine autumnal day at Falmouth Golf Club for the third round of the better ball ¾ handicap winter league.

With no wind and the course looking good and the competition played off winter mats the course offered little to defend itself against the deadly duos that went to bed early on Friday night.

First prize went to Ian Renshaw and Paul Caunter (pictured) who combined superbly to card an incredible score of 49 points.

They carded 23 points on the front nine before cutting loose on the homeward nine for another 26 points to finish one short of the magic 50. Runners up with another splendid haul of 46 points were Marek Churcher and Andrew Bonnett.

Liam Hoban and Richard Marsh took third prize with a very useful 45 points and fourth were David Ambrose and Ray Longstaff with 44 points.

This Saturday is the Monthly medal sponsored by Kelsall Steele Financial Services.
