WEATHER conditions at Falmouth Golf Club for the Four Ball Betterball Winter League on Saturday was not for the faint hearted, writes Keith Rashleigh.

The intrepid golfers battled the frequent hail showers and strong wind around the Pennance headland during the contest.

At the end of the day, no less than five pairs returned 40 stableford points apiece playing off three-quarter handicaps with Bob Pine and Tony Drew proving tougher than the rest over the back nine to snatch victory on countbacks.

Their back nine total was a most impressive 23 with Drew getting a birdie two at the 11th and Pine carding back to back birdies at the par four 13th and 14th holes.

Falmouth Packet:

Bob Pine.

Runners-up were Glenn Fortune and Paul Caunter with a back nine of 20, where unfortunately they blobbed the normally passive 16th hole, which cost them dearly.

Third were Mark Trewin and Tony Gunn with a back nine of 19.

Rod Taylor and Alan Miller finished fourth with 18 on the back nine and their mistake was on the 15th “plateau” hole which they unfortunately blobbed.

The fifth pair to card 40 points was Robbie Edgson and Mike Austin and they will look back at the seven for one point on the par five 17th and think, like so many, “What might have been?”.

This weekend is the Monthly Stableford sponsored by Kelsall Steele Investment Services and the Junior Monthly Stableford.
