WITH four places at next month’s prestigious Royal Cornwall Goblets up for grabs, Falmouth Golf Club’s Foursomes Stableford event was keenly contested on Saturday, writes Keith Rashleigh.

On a damp course, the dangerous pairing of Dave Holland and George Popperwell deservedly won with 39 points in this testing format.

Despite a “blob” at the par three fifth, they reached the turn with 18 points before carding a further 21 on the back nine to win by one point from Angus Morrison and Roger Weeks.

The runners-up got their placing thanks to a better back nine of 20 which just edged Nick Morrison and Paul Collins into third on countback.

Fourth spot went to Tony Drew and Bill Ward with a score of 36.

The previous week saw Paul Collins win the PGA. Pro-Am qualifier with an inspired level par gross 72, net 67, with his round including birdies at the first, third, ninth, 11th and 13th holes.

Finishing behind him was David Blizzard with a fine net 68, while Luke Geach played steadily for his net 68 to take third place.
