Falmouth Golf Club`s Winter League competition ended in something of an anti-climax on Saturday as the final round had to cancelled, having previously been postponed as much of the course was under water again, writes Keith Rashleigh.

League leader Steve Jones was declared the deserving winner having played all six rounds that were played of the ten fixtured in a much reduced competition.

With four scores counting, Steve totalled 79 points with scores of 19. 20.20 and 20. Runner up was Pete Lewis with four scores of 20.19.19.19 for a total of 77 points.

Third was Roger Weeks with scores of 19. 17. 19 and 20 for his total of 75 points. Fourth on countback was Mike Watmore with scores of 20.17.18 and 16 for a total of 71.

The presentation was followed by a celebration of St Patrick's Day with special offers of Guinness etc in the club house provided by the management.

* The wintry conditions again played havoc with the fixtures at Praa Sands, but the men managed to play a 9 hole medal on Sunday morning before the snow arrived.

This was won by Paul Murrish with 35 -10 =25. Full results: Division One: 1/Douglas Pedrick 34 -06.5 =27.5; 2/Ray Crebo 34 -6.5 = 28.5; 3/Michael Jacka 33 -4 =29; 4/Steve Strick 34 -4.5 =29.5 (L6); 5/Gary Thomas 34 -4.5 -29.5.

The course was closed on Saturday, and the Ladies’ competition cancelled.

Next Saturday the Ladies play a Stableford, followed by their Annual Meeting at 4pm, and on Sunday there is the Praa Sands Grouse competition for all playing members. Don’t forget the clocks go forward on Saturday night.

On Wednesday, the Ladies play in the morning, and the Ogres play in the afternoon. On Thursday 29th the Ogres host a friendly match against Cape Cornwall at 10.00am, and on Good Friday there is the Cross Country from 4.00 pm.

* Due to ice and snow the Budock Vean weekend competitions were cancelled. However, earlier in the week the Seniors had a good turnout for their Winter League game played in almost Spring-like conditions. The winner was David Gibbons on 39 pts, the runner-up was Alan Mills with 38 pts and in third spot on 36 pts was Rob Bryant. One can only feel sorry for the greenkeepers whose best efforts continue to be dashed by our intemperate weather.
