With those long sunny days fast approaching, Falmouth Golf course is starting to take on those summer characteristics, the grass is growing, there is some run on the fairways and the greens are getting faster.

The winter league is a distant memory and members are now looking to test themselves against the course, with a medal card in their back pockets.

The first competition of that nature was this week’s Kelsall Steele March monthly medal. It attracted a field of 85 and with good conditions, the scoring was expected to be fairly low.

Fourth place went to the vice captain, Mike Hodges, who carded the best gross on the day, a three over par 74, which gave him a net 65. In third place was Bob Aggus, who also recorded a 65. In second place was seniors’ captain Harry Keene, with an excellent 63. Harry must have thought he was in with a good chance. However, way out in front, sand-wedging himself to his first competition victory, was the owner of Falmouth-based business Kessells Kitchens, Simon Cooper.

Simon started his round with a respectable front nine, but it got better and after shooting one under par on the back nine, he recorded a gross 78, which gave him an incredible net score 57.

Results: 1st, Simon Cooper 57; 2nd, Harry Keene 63; 3rd, Bob Aggus 65; 4th, Mike Hodges 65.
