It was blustery, misty conditions that the field of 92 had to contend with in this week's competition at Falmouth Golf Club, writes David Holland.

It was the Richard Brian Cup and also doubled up as the Scratch Matchplay Qualifier, which had been cancelled earlier in the month due to fog.

The course was playing well and it was anticipated early in the day that somebody would shoot a really low score. In third place was Glynn Churcher, who was six over par after four holes, but managed three birdies around the turn to get his round back on track. This included an impressive one on the seventh, probably the toughest hole on the course, which helped him to a final score of 67. In second place was, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Paul Huckle. Since joining the club at the beginning of the year, Paul has finished in the top five on no less than five occasions, without actually winning anything.

He put together a very steady round to finish with a gross 73, which was in turn a net 64. He must have thought that he had finally secured a win until someone at the bar, let the cat out of the bag, and told him that someone had gone one shot lower.

It was more mushy peas than mashie niblick, as the man in question was Ritchie Perrin the Happy Fryer, who spent all day battering his drives, he managed to combine this with his near perfect chips, to shoot a gross 70. His net score of 63 beat poor old Paul by one shot. Ritchie must have felt the Gods were with him when he heeled his tee-shot off the 18th, just cleared the gorse by inches, hit the back of the bunker on the second green, flew 30 foot in the air and finished about 30 yards away from the pin, just in front of the second green. He then composed himself to finish the hole by lipping his birdie putt.

It was a treble whammy for Ritchie as he won the Cup, qualified as number one seed for the Scratch Matchplay, and secured an away day with club professional, Nick Rogers.

Results: 1st, Ritchie Perrin 63; 2nd, Paul Huckle 64; 3rd, Glynn Churcher 67.
