Sir Winston would have been proud, as no less than 94 competitors took to the course to test themselves in the Annual Churchill Memorial Medal at Falmouth Golf Club last Saturday, writes David Holland.

Conditions were perfect with a clear blue sky and no wind.

The greens were in excellent condition and it wasn’t long before the putts began rolling in and low scores started taking shape. The top three all finished with a nett 64 and could only be separated on countback.

In third place was Ian Renshaw, who shot a gross 78 and produced a massive final effort to try and win the competition, with birdies on the final two holes.

In second place, with an excellent five over par, gross 76 was John Campbell. John has been playing consistently well over the last few years and having won a couple of monthly medals, is now looking to secure a victory in one of the main ‘board job’ competitions. In first place, on countback, was Ken Arch. Since his victory in the Frank Harris in 2009, Ken has gone from strength to strength and on this form will continue to appear as one of the bookie’s favourites for the rest of the summer.

Results: 1st, Ken Arch 64; 2nd, John Campbell 64; 3rd, Ian Renshaw 64; 4th, Scott McCormack 65; 5th, Glenn Fortune 65.

Friday evening saw the hotly contested past captains competition. It was won by 2004’s captain Steve Burrows, with a fantastic 29 points over the 11-hole classic. Derek Hodges, club captain for 1999, won nearest the pin, but possibly the more prestigious event of the evening, was the ‘Ian Poulter Award’ for best dressed past captain. It was very close, but this year’s winner was the fantastically turned out 1989 captain, Peter Ould, who for his efforts wins a multi-million pound contract as the face of Blenkinsop’s.

A special mention must go out to this week’s winners of the ‘Nugget of the Week’ Award. It has been awarded to Micky Doust and Ben Short, who having arranged to play each other in the medal match-play knockout competition, duly went out and did battle for four-and-a-half-hours. Micky won by the narrowest of margins, only to get back in the Clubhouse, check the list and find out that they weren’t even supposed to be playing each other.

In their defence, their names were fairly close to each other on the big piece of paper.
