The David Sulley Charity Memorial cups attracted a bumper turnout at Budock Vean Golf Club on Sunday, writes Keith Rashleigh.

David was a very popular past Captain and Secretary of Budock Vean Golf Club. Club Captain David Houldsworth partnered by Daniel Phillips carded the best four ball better ball of the day with a fine haul of 42 Stableford points.

Six handicapper Daniel Phillips played his usual high standard of golf and he was well supported by captain David who had a very useful run of four ‘three pointers’ at the beginning of the back nine.

The best mixed competition was well won by Paul and Lesley Upperton with a very tidy haul of 38 points and the best Ladies was deservedly won by Glenys Bateson and Maureen Salome with 32 points.

Gill Sulley presented the prizes. The event raised over £250 on the day, which was added to the large amount already raised for the club captain’s Macmillan Appeal.

Stephen Penrose, who had the only back nine two, generously donated his twos winnings of £40 towards the charity fund. In midweek the over 55s club team won the Barlow Cup with victory over Merlin Golf Club for the fourth year running. The team led by Des Sadler narrowly clung on to a 5-1 first leg lead thanks to a hard earned half from Tony Grace and Robert Johnson and a crucial win by Paul Upperton and Charlie Averiss which saw Budock Vean win the two legged match by six-and-a-half matches to five-and-a-half. The Cup was presented by Ted Barlow.

The Ladies Autumn meeting was played for a trophy donated by Olive Jackson where Shirley Mildren returned a fine net 69, which was just enough to pip Tricia Blatter on the countback. Third was Marlene Williams with a net 73.
