Falmouth bounced back from the disappointment of last week’s Wills Salver exit, with an emphatic 5-0 victory over a strongly fancied St Austell side in the first round of this year’s Cornwall Bowl Competition, writes Micky Doust.

Captain Mike Hodges fielded a side of experienced and rookie players and each one performed brilliantly in what turned out to be a comfortable win with only two matches reaching the 18th hole. The matches were played in great spirit and sportsmanship, with one of the St Austell players calling a foul on himself due to an incident which was not seen by players or caddies alike, the result of which lost them that particular hole. As usual the Falmouth team were superbly supported with around 40 avid supporters following the matches.

The winning pairings were: Peter Gaylard and Robert Tongue 4 and 3, Brian Shovlin and Richard Marsh 4 and 2, Nigel Molin and Arthur Clay won 2up, Ben Short and Granite Grant Nicholls 4 and 2, Gary Wall and Roger Fairburn won on 18th.
