Those balmy days of summer seemed like a distant memory, as the Ted Hitchens’ Winter League returned to Falmouth Golf Club last Saturday, writes David Holland.

The course was in excellent condition, there was a large field and a number of low scores were recorded. Several pairs managed to notch up 44 points, but of those, the team with the best back nine were the tried and tested combination of tug man Steve Briers and Ian Renshaw, who fought off the rest, to secure third place. Second place went to the ever reliable John Gresson and Chris Slade, who put together a great round which resulted in a score of 45 points. Winners on the day also with a score of 45 points, but a better back 9, were Marek Churcher and Ross Taylor. They managed to harness the powerful combination of youthful exuberance and hair gel and wily, dogged, worldly experience, to produce an error free round. It is not clear, at the time of writing, how the qualities were distributed, but it appears to have worked.

Full results were as follows: 1st Marek Churcher and Ross Taylor 45pts, 2nd John Gresson and Chris Slade 45pts, 3rd Steve Briers and Ian Renshaw 44pts, 4th Richard Thompson and Tony Schorah 44pts, 5th Brian Craig and Tony Harris 44pts.
