Falmouth Golf Club’s Mail on Sunday Team beat a strong Newquay team in the Mail on Sunday competition.

Falmouth were drawn at home for the first time in living memory, and this proved to be crucial in the final outcome. Lead-off man Henry Chucher fought bravely, but finally succumbed on the 17th green. Duncan Ayres produced some fine golf, including bouncing one off the greenkeeper’s shed onto the green, to win his tie five-and-four. A second point was then secured for the team by Marek Churcher, who won his match comfortably six-and-four. Glenn Fortune lost his match on the 17th, so once again, it was all down to Colin Ross. Playing against a plus one handicapper, Colin took an early lead and held on to it through the turn and into the back nine. He continued to play steadily and then produced back to back birdies at the 15th and 16th to close his game out four-and-two, to earn his team the vital third point. It ensured Falmouth would be in the draw for the third round. Falmouth's Captain Mike Hodges once again thanked his team and went home ‘pleased as punch’ with the team’s victory.
