Falmouth Golf Club played host to the final round of the Ted Hitchens' Winter League on Saturday, with many players hoping for a good finish to promote themselves up the leaderboard and into the prizes, writes Micky Doust.

The weather on the day, which was bright and blustery, would prove significant, as lower than normal scores were returned. This prevented most of the contenders closing the gap on those at the top of the list.

The competition, a better-ball format, with drawn partners, is played over 10 rounds, with each player's best six scores to count and accumulated at the end of the Winter League season. The two front runners for the title were, the ever consistent Dave Holland and Richard Marsh, and with Dave holding a commanding five-point lead before the final round.

Richard with his experienced partner Roger ‘shot Roge’ Dunstan, was hoping for a miracle to overturn the deficit and snatch the title, but it was not to be. Winners on the day were Dan Briers and Andy Kemp with an impressive 45 points, beating Andy McKnight and Phil Cooke on countback, with a better back nine and with their nearest rivals for the minor places posting 43 points, that was certainly no mean achievement. The Ted Hitchens’ Winter League was first played back in the 80s and is still as popular and supported by members old and new. A very good turnout at the presentation saw captain Mike Hodges ask the legendary Derek Hodges to say a few words and recall a few memories before a member of the Hitchens' family handed over the trophy to this year’s winner, Dave Holland. In his acceptance speech Dave thanked all, or most, of his playing partners for their support in helping him become this year’s winner, and made a special mention to Graham Buck for his, as ever, hard work and organisational skills in running the competition which was well received by all in attendance.
