It was local derby time and the bunting was out at Falmouth Golf Club last Thursday, with the visit of Budock Vean Golf Club in the third round of the Mail on Sunday competition.

The match itself had been eagerly anticipated since the last time the sides met at Budock Vean, where Falmouth lost a very close match, in a two hole play-off. It was a strong easterly wind that greeted the lead off players; Falmouth had chosen their inexperienced rising star Marek Churcher and Vean had gone for talisman and club captain Richard Burton. It was Churcher who drew first blood, taking an early lead by winning the first two holes.

He stubbornly held on to the lead for the rest of the round, finally putting Burton to the sword on the 16th green, winning three-and-two. Next out were Duncan Ayres and Geoff Mills, it was a one sided affair, with Duncan giving Falmouth their second point, winning the tie four-and-three.

Falmouth debutante Shaun Ramsey was full of confidence, but came up against the a tough opponent, in the form of Steve Penrose. Shaun battled away but finally dug his own grave on the 15th. Focus then turned to the tie between Glenn Fortune and Paul Upperton. Glenn used his height and bulk to battle the wind and sunk a 25ft putt on the 13th to go four up. He calmly halved the next hole to secure his point and give Falmouth victory. The final match between Colin Ross and Tony Ramsden was won by Colin, which resulted in a final score of 4-1 to the jubilant Falmouth team. Club Captain Mike Hodges, said: “It’s another fantastic win and I'm finding it hard to wipe the smile off my face.”
