Last Saturday's competition, at Falmouth Golf Club, was the Churchill Memorial Medal. The recent wet weather had done the greens the world of good and it was in mint condition as the 91 competitors set out looking to impress the scorers. The competition also doubled up as the Scratch Matchplay qualifier, with the top 16 scratch scores qualifying for the knockout stages, which will be played throughout the summer to find the club champion. There was only a moderate breeze on the day, but it was enough to make club selection vital. In third place was the club’s fashion front man, Steve Thomas. He recorded three well manicured birdies on the back nine, to return a stylish score of 66. Second place went to Darren Horton, who managed to weave his way around the course to great effect and, with 13 pars and only five bogies on his card, signed for a gross 76. This resulted in a great net 64.

The winner on the day however, was the shy and retiring David Holland. He had a level par front nine, which included a brace of 2s, and a strong finish, with a birdie on 14 and an impressive eagle at the last. After carefully checking the card a number of times, it was found to add up to a two under par round of 69 gross, which produced a net 63, pipping the expectant Darren by one shot. David has consistently shunned publicity, but a statement from his PR manager Brian Shovlin, said: “He kept his high balls high and his low balls low, which always helps in those conditions.”

The full results were as follows: 1st, David Holland 63; 2nd, Darren Horton, 64; 3rd, Steve Thomas 66; 4th, Roy Jobson 66; 5th, Richard Marsh 68.
